Early life
Carter Cruise was born on April 24, 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. She was homeschooled for part of her childhood and finished school at Cary High School. Her first job was at a bagel shop, a three-week stint while she was still in high school, and she also worked as a lifeguard and as a waitress before adult film.
She has described 'Carter Cruise' as a brand she built on purpose rather than a name she was given. Her interviews return to the same idea: the name was a vehicle for the writing, acting, music and fashion projects she wanted to try, and the career it opened became the first of several.
College years
In 2009 she enrolled at East Carolina University to study psychology and pre-law. She joined a sorority as a freshman and has described a busy campus life; that chapter became the hook of her early press, the sorority student turned performer.
She left her studies in late 2013, a few months after her first scenes were released, to work in the industry full time. A year later she told Cosmopolitan what the change had felt like from the inside: one year she was sitting in class wondering what to do with her life, and the next she had nine AVN nominations.
Entering the industry
She contacted East Coast Talents, a Florida based agency, herself, and made her debut in August 2013; her first scene was released in 'Pussy Fest' (2013). Her first agent suggested she market herself to older men. She went the other way and aimed at college students instead, a choice that shaped the audience she still has.
In March 2014 she moved to Los Angeles. That June she signed with Spiegler Girls and appeared in AVN's fresh issue. November brought a brand ambassador and spokesmodel role with Airerose Entertainment, and in December Cosmopolitan ran a feature about her in its Sex Work series.
The award run
January 2015 was the turning point. On the 16th she won three XBIZ awards, among them Best New Starlet and two Best Actress categories, for 'Second Chances' and 'Lesbian Vampire Academy'. Eight days later, at the 32nd AVN Awards, she won Best Actress for 'Second Chances' and Best New Starlet, the second performer in the show's history to take both in one year after Jenna Jameson in 1996.
Ahead of the ceremony the Las Vegas Sun had billed her as 'the Meryl Streep of Porn', a line that followed her through mainstream coverage for years. She added XRCO's New Starlet award that April and the exclusive Axel Braun contract in October, then a place on CNBC's 2016 list of the industry's biggest names. She also knew Belle Knox, the fellow college performer at the centre of a 2014 media storm, and said publicly that she was appalled by how Knox had been treated.
Second act
Music started as a feature credit: she sang on Styles&Complete's 'DUNNIT' in January 2015, then launched her own DJ career at SXSW in Austin that spring. Tours followed with Krewella, Adventure Club, Baauer, RL Grime, Borgore and Ookay, and she spent a stretch as tour DJ for Bert Kreischer's Fully Loaded comedy tour. Fraternity parties became a fixture from 2017, the same year her debut single 'Everybody Nose Me' came out; the debut EP 'Send Moods' followed in August 2018.
She has released official remixes for Ghastly, MOONZz and Krewella, and her mixes on SoundCloud have drawn around a million plays. In September 2023 she began hosting 'Ex Virgin' for Dear Media, an interview show about sex, dating and relationships that ran to 31 episodes through 2024. Her own Instagram bio describes her with the tag she has carried for years: the People's DJ.
